Eugen and Brigitte Hartmann founded Hartmann’s Old World Sausage in 1963. From the beginning Hartmann’s was known locally for two things, creating a traditional product and creating it well.

With such a positive local reputation the brand quickly expanded. The Hartmanns' gourmet sausages could soon be found in area supermarkets. Growth continued in this manner and the company eventually caught the attention of a master sausage maker out of Colorado, Josef Brunner.

Josef and his wife Elizabeth purchased Hartmann’s Old World Sausage in 2004. Immediately realizing the potential of the small company, the Brunners began taking steps towards modernization. These changes began in the retail shop with the addition of a fax machine, a credit card processor, and a computer. Thanks to these additions the store was able to handle more business, and the Brunners felt it was time to focus on updating equipment.

The first equipment change came with the addition of a portion control machine, which improved consistency. With that taken care of, the Brunners' next step was to add a natural smokehouse. The new smokehouse featured a microprocessor, which condensed the smoking process and allowed for precise flavor control. The final step towards modernization occurred when a vacuum pack machine was brought in. This machine opened up a world of opportunity for the company; it added flexibility in shipping and guaranteed freshness.

With the equipment updated, the Brunners turned their attention towards production. In an effort to streamline the process, a production schedule was created. This schedule organized the employees and vastly increased output. We now offer over 75 varieties of gourmet sausage and specialty meats, and distribute nationwide.

While the Brunners remain  true to their roots, they decided that it was time for the company name to reflect how the company has changed and grown. In 2015, Hartmann's Old World Sausage became Artisan Meats, to better reflect who we have become and to reaffirm our dedication to bringing you the highest quality of gourmet charcuterie and sausages.
